Posts held: Lord of Cruelly, France; 1st Baron of Gloucester; Lord of Glamorgan. |
His demise: He died eventually from head injuries received in Normandy in 1105. He did live another two years but suffered mentally before the dying from the injury. |
The manor: Thornbury Manor was granted to him by William Rufus and he held it between 1090-1107. Thornbury was amongst 200 manors in Gloucestershire and other counties he owned! They had previously been held by Queen Matilda. Robert had supported William Rufus against the revolt by the King’s half uncle Odo Bishop of Bayeaux & Earl of Kent. Robert doesn't appear to have come across with the Conquest in 1066 and isn't mentioned in the Domesday Book. |
Robert's conquest: He conquered Glamorgan. It is possible that he helped the Welsh Prince Lestyn ap Gwrgan to defeat Rhys ap Tewdwr in a battle in 1090. |
