Above: Cardiff Castle was held by the de Clares who were responsible for subduing the Welsh barons. Gilbert 1180-1230 was the first recorded Gilbert followed by his son Richard 122-1262 and his grandson 1243-1295, Richard strengthened the castle and the younger Gilbert built better accommodation, the south gate and the Black Tower.	Above:  Gilbert de Clare started the construction of Caerphilly 1268 as part of a chain of imposing castles to keep control of Wales.
Above: Gilbert and his son Richard also held Goodrich Castle and one or other of them was responsible for the construction of the keep.
