ÆTHELSTAN
c.893-939
Titles: King of the West Saxons; First King of the English
His name: Æthelstan is the original Anglo-Saxon. The modern spelling is Athelstan.
Legacy: Athelstan did not marry and passed on his lands and manors to his  wider family.
The manor: Athelstan may have held the manor of Thornbury as a crown estate! There is no record of it being owned by him but it must have been his to gift it to a Haylward for services rendered.
Family: The first reference to the manor says that Athelston granted the manor to Haylward Meaw! That Haylward was possibly his half brother Aelfweard/Haylward who died young. There is no record of a wife or children but for Haylward Meaw to pass the manor on to his son Aelfgar around 100 years later then Aelfweard must  have had issue to inherit the manor and pass it down through the generations!

Mother Ecgwynn
