Please note: Due to copywrite concerns I have replaced portraits of a number of individuals with generic portraits. Until I can resolve the complexities of copywrite the site will not look as effective as it would have done with the correct portraits. |

This web site has been created to outline the history of Thornbury Castle through the people connected with it. I was invited to do some art work for an excellent book published about about the castle in 2013. Having lived in Thornbury for nearly 40 years I discovered I knew very little about the castle. I have now researched the lives of the key people who owned the manor and castle. I have also looked at their extended families and the kings and queens who reigned who had links with the people I researched. I wanted to share this information and decided to publish it as a web site. I admit to going off at tangents in my research, so the best place to start is the 'owners timeline' which outlines in chronological order the 40 people who held the title to the manor of Thornbury - find them here. My current research is to trace the Anglo-Saxon families who held the manor but Brictric, a key individual whose tragic demise is recorded here, has a family tree that is not very clear. The current hotel group, who own the castle, have plans to add additional rooms and leisure facilities to extend the accommodation. I will add more as this building project is developed. Thornbury is a lovely town to live in and I am pleased that I have been able to promote the castle which is at the heart of its historical importance. |

The Castle
|
The castle was built as an impressive home, rather than a fortification. It was never completed! It has been lived in, left empty for centuries, rebuilt in the 18th century, been a family home and a top class hotel. Find out more here. |
